With the growing season underway, farmers markets are getting back into gear, with some already making weekly appearances and others due to get started in the next couple weeks.

Major markets already back in the swing of things include the Clintonville, Upper Arlington and Bexley locations, all now managed under the umbrella of nonprofit Common Greens.

“I had been managing all three markets separately, which was completely inefficient,” Michelle White said.

All three markets now have live music every week, and the Clintonville market has received a grant to have local dance groups on-site once a month.

This year, the Clintonville market, which for two years had been held in the parking lot of the Ohio History Center, moved back to its longtime home on North High Street.

“It's so nice to be back in the neighborhood. The vibe is good, everybody is really excited. We're getting lots of good foot traffic,” White said.

Another market that made a COVID move is the Granville Farmers Market, which is now in its 29th year. In 2020, the market moved to Raccoon Valley Park and hasn't looked back.

“That gave us a lot more room and parking, and room for two food trucks, which we didn't have downtown,” said Steve Matheny, the market master.

The market now is holding steady at 50 vendors.

“We take pride in our variety of vendors. We are not a craft market, we're a growers and food market. We have one token craft person or artisan each week, but the other 49 are food vendors,” Matheny said.

This year, the Granville Farmers Market will also allow farmers and customers another way to connect during the week. Many of the farms and other local food producers participating in the market will partner with Cubi Market, an online market that allows participants to place orders for whatever day works well for them and pick up those orders between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. from temperature-controlled lockers, for which they will receive a code via email.

So the fresh fruits and vegetable markets are eager to supply shoppers plenty of options.
