Want to learn more about redistricting? Black Voters Matter, other groups host meeting

Black Voters Matter, the Lafayette chapter of the NAACP and other organizations are hosting a community meeting about redistricting in Lafayette and Louisiana.

The in-person training will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Harambee Event Center, 211 E. Willow St. The event is hosted by the Lafayette chapter of the NAACP, Black Voters Matter, Lead Louisiana and United Ballot.

The groups are hoping to raise awareness about the redistricting process and want to advocate for maps they feel more accurately represent the state's Black population. The groups will then advocate at the Louisiana state capitol on Feb. 9.

A special session on redistricting is being held in Louisiana from Feb. 1 through Feb. 20. During that time state lawmakers will redraw the congressional, state House, and state Senate districts. They also will work on state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, Public Service Commission, and Supreme Court districts.

Maps are adjusted at the state and local level every decade upon the release of updated Census data.
