Want to live like a local? Here are three community theaters in Myrtle Beach area to try

Myrtle Beach has several large entertainment centers for tourists to enjoy, such as Alabama Theatre in North Myrtle Beach and the Pirate’s Voyage Dinner Show in Myrtle Beach.

But for locals, community theater is another entertainment option that is just waiting to be discovered by theater fans.

Here’s a list of three theaters in the area to try.

Long Bay Theatre

Located in the Myrtle Beach mall at 101 Fantasy Harbor Boulevard, Long Bay Theatre is a nonprofit community theater that offers summer acting classes and puts on several productions a year. In the past, the community theatre has put on “Little Shop of Horrors”, “Charlotte’s Web” and “A Christmas Carol.”

The final show of the 2022-23 season is a production of “80s Prom,” which will have several shows in April. General admission tickets are $36, and seniors are $32. You can purchase tickets online at the Long Bay Theatre website.

Open Curtain Theatre

After Stage Left Theatre Company in Market Common disbanded, some former members got together and formed Open Curtain Theatre. It’s located in the side section of the members club Moose Lodge, on Burcale Road.

The community theater, which started in January, is currently rehearsing for a production of “Curtains Up!”, an all-female cast of five. There are four remaining shows left for 2023, including “True West,” which will play June 13 to 25, and “The 39 Steps,” which will play Sept. 7 to 18.

Asher Theatre and Conference Center

The Asher Theatre and Conference Center puts on a variety of different shows and is a community-based performing arts center. Located in Myrtle Beach on 3237 Waccamaw Blvd., Asher Theatre holds several educational workshops, local artist showcases and supports owner James Stephen’s scholarship foundation, which assists students with educational resources.

The Asher Theatre is putting on two new different shows in April, including an Earth, Wind & Fire Tribute Show and an Easter Weekend worship service. You can purchase tickets online at the Asher Theatre website.
