Want to meet Mexican soccer legend Luis Hernández in North Texas? He’ll be at this store
One of Mexico’s greatest soccer players of all time will be in North Texas this weekend, but maybe not where you would expect.
Luis Hernández, who played on the Mexican national team from 1995-2002, will be at the opening of the newest La Verde Gas Station and Convenience Store in Garland on Saturday. The new store is located at 2002 State Highway 66 in Garland.
La Verde is celebrating the gas station’s opening with food specials, face painting, live music, 3-on-3 soccer tournament and a beer garden. Hernández will also be there to meet and greet fans.
Hernández played professional soccer for 15 years, starting with the Mexican club team Cruz Azul in 1990. Although he mainly played on Mexican clubs, Hernández did score goals for Argentinean and even American teams, before hanging up his cleats in 2005.
Known for his long blond hair while playing, Hernández’s made his mark during the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France where he scored four goals. Mexico would lose to Germany in the knockout stage, but Hernández made history as the first Mexican soccer player to score more than two goals in a FIFA World Cup.
Today, Hernández’s 35 goals with the Mexican national team still makes him the fourth all-time leading goalscorer for the country.
La Verde’s opening will be from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, with Hernández in attendance starting at 3:30 p.m.
