We want more of your voices in The Star’s Opinion section. Answer our new survey | Opinion

There are two small paragraphs at the bottom of every day’s editorial page telling readers how to submit letters to the editor, or how to propose guest columns, with the word count and place to send them. Online, it’s on the letters page at KansasCity.com/letters

What? Never seen it? You’re probably not alone. (Go ahead, I’ll give you a moment to look.)

Listen, I need you to know: We want your well-thought out letters, your thoughts, your ideas. We want your rational conservative voices, your sensible liberal voices. In short, we want your point of view represented here in The Star.

In my two weeks as Opinion editor, I know you care about Kansas City. I see your reasoned letters and curious takes on local issues. Who knew Tina Turner played a little show in Kansas City’s then-River Quay? Tom Kramer of Independence did, and told us about it.

Cati Kral of Kansas City reminded us about the importance of keeping our children hydrated as they enjoy outdoor activities.

Mary Schultis of Kansas City commented on Missouri’s legal system and the fact that we have the fastest-growing rural female prison population.

Many of you — including Daniel J. Perez of Prairie Village, Gary Groninger of Olathe, Burt Walker of Raymore and Joe Matye of Kansas City — have a lot to say about the Royals and the proposed new stadium.

And last month, we published an online survey asking two questions: What do you like about the new terminal at Kansas City International Airport, and what would you change about it? We got hundreds of responses.

I know you are out there, and you write about issues you care about. Still, I also know there are many of you who may feel like your voice is not needed or wanted. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

I encourage you, no, challenge you to take our new online survey asking what issues are most important to you. Scroll down to the bottom of this page to share your thoughts.

Or print out the survey and mail it in, using the address for letters listed below. This will help us write opinion pieces and publish letters and guest columns on the subjects you care about.

If you missed the daily paragraphs on the editorial pages I am talking about, here they are:

  • To send letters: Visit KansasCity.com/letters to submit your letter to the editor of 200 words or fewer. You may also mail your submission to Letters to the Editor, The Kansas City Star, 4741 Central St. #600, Kansas City, MO 64112. Include your address and phone number for verification only.

  • Guest Columns: The Star welcomes exclusive essays of up to 600 words. Email the essay and a photo of the author to oped@kcstar.com. All submissions are edited before publication.

I hope you do both: Take the survey, and submit your letters. Let’s make The Star’s Opinion pages even more representative of our region.
