Want to name a shark? Sure you do. Newport Aquarium wants your help 🦈

The Newport Aquarium is now home to three new sand tiger sharks.

Two males and one female sand tiger shark have been placed in their new home in the Surrounded by Sharks exhibit, and the aquarium is looking for the public's help in naming them. The aquarium is accepting name submissions beginning now and through the end of the year through newportaquarium.com.

The three sand tiger sharks will join several other species, including black tip reef sharks and the shark rays Sweet Pea, Sunshine and Scooter.

“We are thrilled and humbled to care for these sharks and help scientists around the world make sure thesebeautiful creatures survive and thrive on earth,” Kelly Sowers, Newport Aquarium general curator said in a release.

Although the sharks may look intimidating with their nearly 7-foot-long frames and toothy mouths, they are known to be relatively docile and eat mainly fish, lobster and some rays. They are often found in shallow bays and inshore tropical waters, and have also been found circling shipwrecks off the coast of the Eastern U.S.

They are listed as critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List and are protected in the U.S., Australia and New Guinea.
