Want your own island? Volunteers needed for Lake Superior parkland

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Have you ever dreamed of owning your own island? The National Parks Service is offering up an opportunity to make that dream a reality. Well, kinda.

The NPS is looking for volunteers to live on Sand Island on Lake Superior this upcoming summer.

“(These volunteers) will spend three weeks on the island. They will meet a variety of people, including boaters, hikers, kayakers and campers and will be the primary contact for visitors to the island,” the NPS said in a Facebook post.

Volunteers are needed from June 10 through July 1, although those dates may shift depending on weather conditions. The NPS also says volunteers may be forced to stay longer than three weeks depending on weather conditions.

Sand Island is one of 21 islands in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore at the northeastern tip of Wisconsin’s Bayfield Peninsula, about 140 miles west of Marquette.

People interested in volunteering are encouraged to apply online.
