Want to get rid of those fine lines in your neck? Try this new injectable moisturizer

Finally, there is a way to plump fine lines in the neck, cheeks and forehead without adding unwanted volume. The FDA recently approved an injectable moisturizer by JUVÉDERM called Skinvive™ that uses hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate the skin from the inside out.

What does hyaluronic acid do?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is an injectable saccharide, or natural sugar, that acts as a humectant and pulls water into itself. This increases the water in the skin, plumping up and smoothing away fine lines. And because it is water that gives the skin its youthful, “bouncy” characteristics, injectable hyaluronic acid is the best treatment to get the so-called “Jell-O skin” that is popular on TikTok.

How does Skinvive work?

Skinvive is made of a lower hyaluronic acid concentration than other injectable fillers, allowing it to smooth away fine lines without increasing volume. I began using this new product on patients last week and I can smooth lines in the lips without increasing lip size. Skinvive can also be used to hydrate the neck and decollete area — it is like Photoshop for tiny lines!

Skinvive is used every six months to hydrate skin in the same way that mesotherapy, which also applies subcutaneous injections, has been used. Results are subtle and natural-looking and last around six months. Most people require two syringes per treatment, though some areas can be treated with a single syringe.

What to watch out for

Not all injectable hyaluronic acid products are the same. Beware of an illegal product called Profhilo that disreputable medspas are illegally importing from Europe. This is another injectable HA product, but is not FDA approved for use in the United States because it has not been proven safe or effective.

Any U.S. medspa that is offering this product is breaking the law. If they are breaking the law in this area, they are likely cutting other corners as well, such as not following OSHA safety and sterility laws and leaving you at risk for injection.

Luckily, we now have a legal and safe option with Skinvive. The company that makes it, Allergan, requires training before a physician can purchase the product for use.
