You want to see the Farm Dog of the year, it’s Skippy

McDUFFIE COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – At Coastal Acres Farm outside of Dearing, there are 200 cows, and the best cow hand around comes with four paws, Skippy.

“Work on the farm with you all day long. When we get up in the morning, she says we’re burning day light, and we’re in the range the minute we hit it,” said Laura Adams.

Skippy is a rescue dog, specially trained to work with cows, and has been on the farm a couple of years.

She was needed after Laura’s husband Donald was severely injured, so Skippy came in to pick up the slack.

“When we introduced her to the bulls, she had to show them who was boss, and they introduced her to the cows. She pretty much took over the farm,” said Laura.

And Skippy took over the nation.

This mixed breed Border Collie is the 2024 American Farm Bureau Farm Dog of the year.

“And to represent the farm dogs and the farmers that work so hard every day, we’re excited,” said Laura. “And we got $5,000, and she got a year’s supply of Purina Pro Dog Food.”

Keeping cows in line is hard work, but even the farm dog of the year likes a little loving.

“’She is a pet. She gets treats every night from Donald. She is a pet. She’s part of the family, but she’s part of the team,” said Laura.

But no resting on these laurels, Skippy. Even if you’re the best of the best farm dog, it’s back to work tomorrow.
