As the Myrtle Beach Classic approaches, the Grand Strand’s first PGA Tour tournament, prospective patrons have new VIP seating options.
Called Cub 17, the seating area behind the 17th tee at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club will offer an elevated spectator view, according to a press release from Visit Myrtle Beach.
Club 17 will overlook holes 11, 16, 17 and 18, offering patrons an open bar and food.
Tickets go on sale Jan. 29, 2024, according to the press release, and prospective buyers can purchase tickets at the event’s website. There is also a Club 18 for spectators to sit in an exclusive setting, and tickets are still available. Still, supply is limited, according to the press release.
Dennis Nicholl, the Director of Golf at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, said the course would offer tour professionals an exciting experience.
“I respect the game so much, and it’ll be interesting to see how they play this course,” he said in a Jan. 17, 2024 interview.
The course underwent some renovations before the tournament. The course redid or added several tee boxes, and the 8th hole went from a par five to a par four, The Sun News reported in August 2023. The renovations cost more than half a million dollars, The Sun News reported in August 2023.
One of the oldest and most historic courses in the Myrtle Beach area, the Robert Trent Jones course’s 13th hole, known as Waterloo, was once ranked one of America’s 18 best holes by Sports Illustrated, according to Play Golf Myrtle Beach.
Nicholl added the course has mostly stayed the same since the front nine holes opened to the public in 1950.
“(Robert Trent Jones) had what they call a big risk-reward philosophy in his design that all the greens here are elevated bunkers cut into them,” Nicholl said. “Some of that has evolved over time; some of the flash face bunkers weren’t that deep in 1952 ... (but the course is) about the same course it is now. They switch a few holes from par four to par five, or vice versa, but not major, major changes as far as earth moving. The golf course just keeps maturing.”
It is also one of Grand Strand golfers’ favorites. Despite having challenging holes like number 13, The Dunes Golf & Beach Club was named golfers’ third favorite in a July 2023 Sun News readers poll.
The tournament will take place from May 6-12, 2024.
