Wantage man arrested in shooting called police on himself, court records say

A Wantage man arrested this week for critically injuring another man and fatally shooting two dogs called police himself to report the crime before leaving the scene, court documents show.

State police received a call at 4:51 p.m. Monday from a man later identified as Daniel Simpson, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained by the New Jersey Herald. Simpson told police he had shot an individual, whose name is redacted from the affidavit, at a house on Route 628 and requested an ambulance to the scene before disconnecting the phone.

Officers at the home found a man on the kitchen floor who had been shot in the back of the head as well as two dogs with gunshot wounds, the affidavit states. The man was flown to Morristown Medical Center for treatment, while state police previously stated the dogs died from their injuries.

Police eventually located Simpson on Struble Road in Sandyston, where he surrendered to authorities. A handgun registered to Simpson was recovered near the suspect during his arrest.

Simpson, who turned 33 on Tuesday, was charged with attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Police have not publicly disclosed the relationship between the suspect and the victim.

High Point Regional High School, located near the scene of the shooting, canceled all activities Monday night and closed the building at the request of state police. All students and visitors were evacuated "without incident" as administrators and security personnel remained on site, school Superintendent Scott Ripley said on the school's Facebook page.
