He was wanted for fleeing, and just did it again, Broward cops say. It didn’t work this time

A man with an active warrant for fleeing and eluding was taken into custody Friday after leading Broward sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase down Florida’s Turnpike, according to BSO.

The incident began just after 10 a.m. Friday when detectives with the Pompano Beach Crime Suppression Team saw a man conceal a firearm and then enter a store in the 500 block of Northwest 15th Street in Pompano Beach, the department said.

“Detectives then observed the male subject leave the store in a suspicious manner and get into the driver seat of a white BMW, at which time detectives attempted to conduct a traffic stop,” BSO said in a news release. “The driver of the white BMW fled the scene and refused to stop.”

News helicopters showed the BMW passing cars and weaving in and out of traffic before pulling into the Pompano Beach Service Plaza. A man and woman can be seen bailing out.

The sheriff’s office said deputies pursued until the man surrendered. He was then taken into custody. He was later identified as 30-year-old Luis Martinez.

According to BSO, a gun and drugs were recovered from the car. BSO said Martinez is a convicted felon with an active warrant out of Osceola County for fleeing and eluding.

Martinez now faces charges including grand theft of firearm, unlawful possession of personal ID of another, possession of weapon or ammo by convicted felon, possession of cannabis 20 grams or less, driving with a permanently revoked license and fleeing and eluding law enforcement officers. He also being held on the fleeing and eluding warrant and a warrant for being a habitual offender of driving with a revoked license.

An unidentified woman was detained, but has not yet been charged, BSO said.
