Wapello, Winfield-Mount Union punch playoff tickets with home victories

The Wapello and Winfield-Mount Union high school football teams punched their tickets to the playoffs with victories on Friday night .

Wapello gave head coach Todd Parsons his 100th career victory with a 45-6 rout of North Cedar at Carl "Mac" McGill Field in Wapello.

Winfield-Mount Union, needing to beat English Valleys by at least 14 points to advance, rolled to a 71-8 win over English Valleys at Winfield.

The playoff pairings are set for the opening round on Friday, Oct. 21. All games will start at 7 p.m.

In Class 2A, Central Lee will travel to play Monticello.

In Class 1A, ninth-ranked Mediapolis will host Central Decatur.

In Class A, Wapello will travel to Troy Mills to take on sixth-ranked North Linn, while Columbus will host Maquoketa Valley.

In 8-Man, third-ranked WACO will entertain Martensdale-St. Marys, Winfield-Mount Union will travel to Gilbertville to play second-ranked Don Bosco and New London will hit the road to play seventh-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

WAPELLO 45, NORTH CEDAR 6: The Indians qualified for the playoff in impressive fashion. Casey Short completed 5-of-7 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown, while Jake Gustison rushed for 175 yards on just eight carries and scored three touchdowns. He also hauled in a 21-yard pass.

NEW LONDON 72, HLV 14: The Tigers closed the regular season strong with a big road win at Victor. Boden Pickle rushed for 107 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns. Dom Lopez rush for 74 yards and passes for 75 yards. Blaise Porter returned a punt for a touchdown. Reean Seberg rushed for a 40-yard touchdown and Gavin Menke-Baile rushed for a score. Even Reed and Brigham Porter each caught touchdown passes. Pickle and Trent Wilkerson led the team with eight tackles apiece, while Blaise Porter had seven tackles and Michael Raines had five tackles.

WINFIELD-MOUNT UNION 71, ENGLISH VALLEYS 8: University of Iowa recruit Cam Buffington rushed for 266 yards and scored eight touchdowns and had 14 tackles in the Wolves' home win.

Also for the Wolves, Cole Milks passed for 32 yards and rushed for 30 yards. Lane Genkinger and Eli Miller each had a rushing touchdown, while Abram Edwards caught two passes for 32 yards.

NO. 3 WACO 42, TRI-COUNTY 10: Clayton Miller completed 3-of-4 passes for 26 yards and scored on a 22-yard run in the Warriors' victory.

Also for the Warriors, Louden Huisenga rushed for 114 yards on five carries and two scores. Simeon Reichenbach rushed for 41 yards and a score.

The Warriors held the Trojans to minus-5 total yards, including minus-15 rushing.

NO. 9 MEDIAPOLIS 55, LOUISA-MUSCATINE 7: The Bulldogs raced to a 35-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a home win at the Mediapolis Athletic Complex.

Anthony Isley rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown and Josh Glendening scored on an 80-yard run. Noah Schmidgall rushed for 66 yards and a score, Peyton Johnson rushed for 89 yards and a score and Braxton Davis rushed for 60 yards on two carries. Trent Hicks and Cole Lipper also scored touchdowns for the Bulldogs.

Chris Day rushed for 93 yards and scored the Falcons' only touchdown.

NO. 9 ALBURNETT 32, COLUMBUS 31 (OT): Mason Neighbors completed 20-for 36 passes for 225 yards and four scores. A missed extra point in overtime proved to be the difference.

CENTERVILLE 44, CENTRAL LEE 7: Cory Jones hit Kegan Damico with a 13-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter for the Hawks' lone score in a road loss.

Jones threw for 35 yards and caught two passes for 39 yards. Chase Johnson led the Hawks in rushing with 30 yards on 12 attempts. The Hawks were held to 90 rushing yards by the Big Reds.

ILLINI WEST 30, WEST HANCOCK 0: Gannon Bergmann threw for 86 yards and a score and rushed for 45 yards and a score in the Chargers' win at Hamilton, Illinois.

Peyton Brown rushed for 39 yards and Ian Bentzinger rushed for 22 yards and two scores.
