Do not legalize recreational marijuana in Kentucky! Tax income is a poor excuse for pot sales.

The Courier Journal reported that Kentucky could legalize recreational marijuana if HB 420 is passed. Rep. Rachel Roberts, D-Newport, introduced the bill to applause on the House floor on Jan. 30The Courier Journal has received many letters to the editor in response to this bill. We have published letters in support of HB 420. Letters below are from readers who are opposed.

I can not stand the smell of 'skunkweed'

I am against the legalization of marijuana. I can not stand the smell of the skunkweed they smoke. I come out of my apartment and it reeks because someone has decided to smoke in my hallway right outside my door. I work in downtown Cincinnati and since the legalization has gone into effect the entire city smells like skunk. They come into my space and it's on their clothing, hair etc. and it fills the space with stink.

I do not want someone working in any industry that allows the use of pot by their employees. I don't want food served to me by people in restaurants where the employees reek of the stuff. I don't want to get into a bus or rideshare with someone who has decided to partake, putting myself and my family at risk. Medical cannabis should be the only thing legalized as it can help cancer patients and such and it doesn't contain the THC that causes the high. Stop prioritizing legalizing drugs and start helping people to afford housing and groceries.

Legalizing marijuana for recreational use is unconscionable

Legalizing a gateway drug such as marijuana is wrong. That's all we need is two million people in this state getting high every day! People think that tobacco is a waste of money? Marijuana is much more so! Get ready to have way more teens high at school. How could any person with a thinking mind and a conscience advocate for this to be legal? Marijuana is a gateway drug that over time dumbs people down. Now, there will be how many more newborns born having been subjected to THC while in the womb.

Tax income? That's not a defense. Also, the oil is all that is necessary, selling the bud for medicinal purposes is outrageously stupid! Great. Now we will have people operating machinery, 18 wheelers, dump trucks, piloting planes, teaching, policing, etc. No marijuana related fatalities? Really? How many people have the cartels killed over it's distribution? Next, proponents will want to legalize a slightly harder drug. Where does it end? The war needs to continue and be waged in earnest! Legalizing for recreational use is unconscionable. It is the desire of a low brow mindset!
