Hey! I’m Erin Glynn and I cover Butler, Warren and Clermont counties.

I saw a meal called the “warden burger” referenced in the state inspection reports of the Butler County Jail. Then, it popped up again in the jail's request for a new food service contractor. So I naturally wanted to know more.

The burger is served three times a day for seven days as an "orientation" for inmates in solitary confinement. Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones said it's effective for keeping order in the jail.

Jones invited The Enquirer to come and lunch on the warden burger with him. It tasted better than I thought, as punishment meals go.

More interesting than the burger itself, though, is the questions it raises about what’s fair game when it comes to discipline in jails. It turns out that Jones, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction and a prison food researcher all have different ideas about that.

You can read about them in my story today. You can also check out an overview of the other versions of warden burgers around the country, as well as the courts that have considered whether food like this is cruel and unusual punishment.
