Ward's four goals guide Notre Dame-West Burlington to boys soccer semifinals

Cole Ward scored four goals to lead Notre Dame-West Burlington to a 10-0 victory over Wapello in the Class 1A, Region 5 boys soccer quarterfinals at Notre Dame's Tackleson Field Thursday night.

The Nikes (15-3) advance to Monday's semifinals, hosting Albia (4-8) at Tackleson Field.

ND-WB's Gabe Zurita and Carson Wagner each scored two goals. Parker Davis and Aidan Krell each scored a goal. Davis and Wagner each had three assists and Zurita had two.

Arya Nowroozi finished with four saves.

Davis broke the state record for single-season assists with 40 and has the state craeer record for assists with 80.

NORTH 3, BURLINGTON 2 (OT): A goal in overtime lifted North to a Class 3A regional quarterfinal win over the Grayhounds at Davernport.

Braden Schoene scored both of Burlington's goals on assists by Eddie Valdez. Goalkeeper Cayden Lowary allowed three goals, one by penalty kick, but had 13 saves.

Schoene, a junior, finished the season with a team-high 11 goals. The Grayhounds ended the season at 9-7.

North (11-7) advances to Monday's semifinal round, facing Pleasant Valley (14-1) at Bettendorf,

ALBIA 4, CENTRAL LEE 3: Albia slipped past the Hawks in a Class 1A, Region 5 quarterfinal match at Donnellson.

Albia led 3-1 at halftime, but Central Lee tied the score on goals by Javier Guevara and Logan Crank. The Blue Demons scored the match-winner on a penalty kick with 1:50 left to play.

Central Lee's Ayden Kent scored a goal in the first half. Clayton Geerdes and Landan Lowenberg each had an assist. Jacob Vollmer finished with four saves.

Albia (4-8) advances to Monday's semifinal against Notre Dame-West Burlington at Notre Dame's Tackleson Field. Central Lee bowed out at 5-6.

MEDIAPOLIS 2, DANVILLE-NEW LONDON 1: The Bulldogs scored both of their goals in the second half for a come-from behind victory in the Class 1A regional quarterfinal at Mediapolis.

Owen Russell scored two goals for Mediapolis in the final 1:39 to lift the Bulldogs to victory.

Randy Hine had three saves for the Bulldogs, who host Columbus/W-MU on Monday in a semifinal match.

FORT MADISON 8, MOUNT PLEASANT 0: Mitchell Pothitakis had three goals and three assists to lead the Bloodhounds to a shutout win in a Class 2A regional quarterfinal match at Baxter Sports Complex in Fort Madison.

The Bloodhounds' Nathan Bowen finished with two goals and two assists. Jacob Shottenkirk, Dayton Davis and Nathaniel Swigart each scored a goal. Leif Boeding had two assists and Davis and Henry Graham each had one.

Reiburn Turnbull and Conner Gehling shared goalkeeping duties. Gehling had one save in the second half.

Fort Madison (13-5) hosts Washington (12-4) in Monday's semifinal round.

WASHINGTON 10, KEOKUK 0: The Demons rolled past Keokuk in a Class 2A regional quarterfinal match at Fort Madison's Baxter Sports Complex.

Washington (12-4) advances to Monday's semifinal against Fort Madison at Fort Madison. Keokuk ended its season at 2-13.

PREP BASEBALL

IOWA CITY HIGH 9, BURLINGTON 2: John Klosterman went 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead Iowa City High to victory over the Grayhounds at Iowa City.

The Little Hawks led 6-0 before Burlington scored both of its runs in the fourth inning on Owen Fawcett's two-run homer.

Alex Fawcett, Owen Fawcett and Hunter Ford had two hits each for Burlington. Jacob Zahner was the losing pitching. He gave up six runs, just three earned, on four hits and a walk in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out four.

Max Waldschmidt was the winning pitcher.

Burlington (0-1) plays at Bettendorf Tuesday. City High improved to 4-1.

MEDIAPOLIS 8, MOUNT PLEASANT 7: Kyler Crow's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Bulldogs a walk-off win at Mediapolis.

Crow finished 2-for-4. Ryan Ensminger and Xay Gordon each doubled for Mediapolis. Crow, Aidan Danz and Kamden Stotlar each had two RBIs. Jaxon Brooks picked up the win with two innings of relief. He allowed no runs, no hits and one walk while fanning three.

Zerek Venghaus led Mount Pleasant at the plate with two singles in two official trips. Cooper Keldgard and Lincoln Henriksen both doubled. Venghaus was the losing pitcher.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

CHARGERS, TITANS QUALIFY: Illini West qualified athletes for six state meet events and West Hancock will be entered in four due to performances at the Class 1A sectional meet at Rushville, Illinois,

Illini West's Max Ditmer advances to state in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. At the sectional, he finished third in the 100 in 11.29 and third in the 200 in 22.93. The Chargers' Nolan Deitrich advances in high jump with a second place finish at 1.85 meters. Cole Kirkham advances with a third place finish in the 800-meter run, clocked at 2:02.81.

Kirkham also advances in two relays. Trayton Anders, Jerick LeMaire, Kirkham and Matt McDowell finished second in the 4x400 in 3:33.47. Anders, Nick Manzo, Kirkham and McDowell finished second in the 4x800 in 8:48.72.

West Hancock's Miles Sheppard advances in two distance events. He won the 1,600-meter run in 4:25.99 and the 3,200 in 9:38.93.

The Titan 4x800 relay team of Noah Stout, Quentin Althar, Parker Quinlan and Kendall Meugge advance with a victory in that event in 8:42.79. Stout also qualified for the 1,600 run after finishing third in 4:39.03.

Camp Point Central won the sectional team title with 90 points, three points better than runner-up Rushville-Industry. Illini West was fourth with 67 points and West Hancock was sixth with 55 points.

The state meet is May 26 and 28 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois.

PREP SOFTBALL

CANTON 5, WEST HANCOCK 3: The Little Giants scored three runs in the sixth inning and ousted West Hancock in the Class 2A, regional semifinals at Canton, Illinois.

West Hancock was limited to four hits -- two each by Kendall Nagel and Paige Wasielewski. Nagel had two RBIs and was also the losing pitcher. She gave up five runs, three earned, on 10 hits and a walk in seven innings. She struck out five.
