Need a warm place tonight? Here are local warming centers, shelters open under Code Blue
With temperatures expected to drop to frigid levels over the next several nights, 19 New Jersey counties have activated Code Blue, a policy that opens additional beds and warming shelters to take people experiencing homelessness off the streets.
If you need shelter, call the statewide homeless hotline at 211 or 877-652-1148.
"Arctic blast basically [is] coming in overnight, and it is going to be bitterly cold for the next couple of days," Col. Pat Callahan, superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, said at a press briefing Monday. He said that to find a warming center nearby, residents can go to the website NJ211.org.
The Bergen County shelter, at 120 South River St. in Hackensack in the Board of Social Services building, acts as the county's warming shelter, offering additional room for those who need a warm place to stay. The extra space is available between Jan. 10 and 16 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Passaic County will shelter extra people between Jan. 10 and 12 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at three locations: the Passaic County Board of Social Services at 80 Hamilton St. in Paterson; the City of Passaic Warming Center at 276 Broadway in Passaic; and the Christopher Columbus Community Center at 60 Temple St. in Paterson.

Warren County doesn't formally activate Code Blue, said the county's emergency management coordinator, Frank Wheatley, because the county doesn't reach the threshold of people experiencing homelessness that is required, he said. In the 2021 point-in-time count, where volunteers and shelters count the number of people experiencing homelessness on one night, Warren counted six unsheltered people and 68 people living in shelters. If someone needs shelter in Warren County, they should call 211, he said.

Similarly, Sussex County, which did not issue a Code Blue alert, counted eight people living on the streets and 32 living in shelters in January 2021.
