What's the difference between a bagel and a doughnut?

This isn't a silly question. Not everyone has daily — you know who you are — experiences with bagels.

Bagels are actually a type of bread, which is different than a doughnut, which is a type of fried dough.

Bagels are different from bread in that while most breads are baked after rising, bagels are boiled before being baked.

And yes, doughnuts get their own national day, on June 7.

What is a schmear or schmeer?

A schmear means a layer of something you've spread or asked for on your bagel.

It's often used in conjunction with the request for a schmear of cream cheese. You could ask for a schmear of butter, peanut butter, jelly ... don't look at us, it could happen!

Are New York bagels that much better than others?

"NYC bagel purists will claim the main difference between a New York bagel vs. a regular bagel is the water you boil them in. Much like a specific vineyard terroir is used to make a wine, certain minerals in New York City tap water are attributed to creating the best bagels," according to New York City Pass.
