SPENCER - The beach at Luther Hill Park is closed until further notice due to an outbreak of blue-green algae.

Known as cyanobacteria, blue-green algae can cause gastrointestinal symptoms if it is consumed in small amounts. In larger amounts it may cause liver or neurological damage, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Contact with cyanobacteria can cause skin or eye irritation. Inhaling water spray containing cyanobacteria can cause asthma-like symptoms. Small children and pets are more susceptible to the effects of cyanotoxins than adults.

The algae blooms often happen as temperatures rise and weather is calm and sunny. The bacteria thrives in warm, nutrient-rich water and has been found in Lake Whittemore several times in the past.

The state lists areas where blooms are reported on their website at https://www.mass.gov/alerts/harmful-cyanobacterial-bloom-advisories-in-massachusetts-current-as-of-june-22-2022.

If a bloom is occurring, the water may appear blue or green, the color of pea soup, and there may be a scum on the surface. Not all blooms are listed on the state's website and swimmers are warned that if they see water that appears affected, they should stay out.
