Warm and windy Saturday before stormy Sunday

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Friday, Utah! After seeing some showers this morning, the trend will be calmer skies this afternoon as our storm system exits.

In northern Utah, we’ll see a mix of sun and clouds this afternoon as temperatures run a little cooler than yesterday. Outside of a few spots along the Wasatch Front that could hit 60, most in northern Utah will see highs in the 40s and 50s. In southern Utah, we’ll see mostly sunny skies with highs in the 60s and 70s for most while places like Moab, Lake Powell, and St. George sneak into the low and mid 80s. Tonight will bring clear skies with cool overnight lows. Most will drop into the 30s and 40s.

The best way to describe our weather coming up this weekend is topsy-turvy. The high pressure that builds in today will quickly move from west to east, resulting in a strong southerly flow taking over Saturday. The strong southerly winds will push our temperatures well above average across the state. Winds will be gusty across the state with a High-Wind Watch being posted for areas along and west of I-15 from Juab County down to Iron County. On Saturday, we’ll see highs in the 60s and 70s for most across the state with a chance the Wasatch Front gets into the upper 70s. Meanwhile, St. George could see upper 80s. Skies will be mostly quiet outside of a slight chance for a few pop-ups in the high terrain.

That southerly flow will precede a storm system that will arrive Sunday into Monday from the west. This storm will bring cooler air and scattered showers by Sunday with wet weather favoring the northern two-thirds of the state. Even with another cool down we’ll mainly see valley rain and mountain snow. With a northwesterly flow staying in place into next week, a couple of systems will move in that will help to keep temperatures below average for most while the chance of wet weather could stick around through the first half of next week. Northern Utah may end up seeing some healthy moisture on the magnitude of 0.5″-1.5″. In the mountains above 7,000 ft. in northern Utah, several inches-plus of snow looks probable while some mountains could see over a foot between Monday and Tuesday. Stay tuned!
