For warmer weather just head south…to Antarctica

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — It’s no secret that temperatures have been well below average for this time of year across central Ohio. This weekend, another round of arctic air will move in and highs will remain in the 10s-20s.

There is one spot warmer than Columbus that is noteworthy, and it’s located in Antarctica. The Palmer Station, located on the northern tip of the continent close to Chile, currently has a temperature reading of 35 degrees above 0.

The forecast is expected to stay in the mid 30s for most of the week while normal January high temperatures at the station reach upper 30s.

It should be noted that the research station located at the South Pole has a temperature reading of -20 degrees, so the entire continent is not warmer than central Ohio.

This should not come as a surprise for a one main reason. It’s summer in that part of the world. The axis of the earth has Antarctica tilted towards the sun during these months. Also the continent this time of year also experiences perpetual sunlight.

We will warm up in central Ohio eventually. A taste of spring will soon be on it’s way. Those details can be found in your most accurate forecast.
