Warming centers open across North Georgia as ‘dangerously’ cold weather approaches

Metro Atlanta will likely experience the coldest weather in eight years over the next few days.
Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz forecasts temperatures on Saturday morning to be the coldest since January 2015.
In response, some counties are opening warming stations.
DeKalb County will have four warming stations available through Thursday, Dec. 22, beginning at 8 p.m.
Fire Station 3, 100 N. Clarendon Avenue, Avondale Estates, GA 30002
Fire Station 4, 4540 Flakes Mill Road, Ellenwood, GA 30294
Fire Station 6, 2342 Flat Shoals Road, Atlanta, GA 30316
North DeKalb Senior Center, 3393 Malone Drive, Chamblee, GA 30341
Anyone staying in those warming centers must follow the county’s COVID-19 protocols including wearing a mask, social distancing and undergoing a temperature check.
In addition to the warming centers made available by DeKalb County, one will be available from Thursday, Dec. 22 through Sunday, Dec. 25, with more dates likely to come.

Individuals must meet at Sycamore House, across from the Decatur Library by 7 p.m.
Families may come directly to Decatur First United Methodist Church, 300 E Ponce De Leon Avenue in Decatur between 6:15 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. The entrance is the gym door at the back of the church next to the dumpsters.
The city of East Point has a warming center available at the City Annex, 3121 Norman Berry Drive from Wednesday, Dec. 21 through Sunday, Dec. 25 between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.
East Point residents can call 404-761-2177 for transportation assistance.
The facility can house up to 80 people. Face masks are required. Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided to those in need.

In Cobb County, MUST ministries Hope House homeless shelter will serve as a warming center through Dec. 26.
The center is located at 1297 Bells Ferry Road in Marietta.
In Hall County, a warming center will be operated in Gainesville by Good News at Noon. Any branch of the Hall County Library will have information on the warming center and other resources. Also, the United Way has dropped off blankets, sleeping bags, and other supplies at the main library branch in Gainesville and at the Blackshear Place branch. If you need these supplies you’ll need to pick them up on Thursday, Dec. 22, as the branches will be closed starting Friday for the holiday.
Georgia State Parks are opening warming centers for homeowners who may lose power and to stranded motorists. ParkPass fees are waived for anyone using the warming stations. There are 19 locations available through Dec. 26. See a map and spreadsheet of the locations here.
Clayton County is making Sequoyah Middle School available as a warming station starting Friday at noon.
