Warming shelters extended in Ashland, Medford

Dec. 13—Medford and Ashland have extended operation of their extreme weather shelters in the face of a freezing forecast, but Ashland's shelter will last one day longer.

In a Nixle alert Tuesday, Ashland announced it had extended its shelter in Pioneer Hall, 73 Winburn Way, until Dec. 16. The shelter opens each night at 5 p.m. and closes the following morning at 9:00.

Doors close for the night at 9 p.m., the alert stated, with lights out at 10 p.m. Bedding will not be provided, but well-behaved pets are welcome at Ashland's shelter.

Medford City Manager Brian Sjothun authorized the extension of an extreme weather shelter to Dec. 14, according to a release sent jointly by the city of Medford and ACCESS. The shelter, at 332 W. Sixth St., will be open from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.

Medford's shelter will offer bedding, food and dry storage for up to 64 individuals, the release said.

Both shelters are low-barrier shelters, meaning no drugs tests or screening will be conducted on those looking to get warm.
