Warner Robins appoints new interim police chief, continues search for permanent role

Warner Robins appointed Capt. Wayne Fisher to serve as the new interim police chief Monday night.

The appointment came one day after Chief John Wagner retired, following 31 years with Warner Robins Police.

The Warner Robins City Council unanimously approved Fisher, who has worked in the department for 20 years and will serve as interim chief on a short-term basis.

Mayor LaRhonda Patrick said the council made the selection internally, choosing from the department’s six captains. She said one of Fisher’s main responsibilities will be to help the city choose its next permanent police chief.

“With the rest of our command staff, we have some great individuals and my hope is that they will consider being the permanent chief and go through that vetting process with us,” Patrick said at the city council meeting. “So there are many we could have selected but I chose to select Capt. Wayne Fisher with the understanding he will be instrumental in helping us in selecting the permanent chief.”

Fisher will serve for a “short period” and another long-term interim police chief may be appointed later if a permanent chief is not chosen sooner.

“I am honored and humbled to serve the people of Warner Robins in this new role as interim chief,” Fisher said in a statement. “It is a privilege to lead an exceptional group of men and women who have dedicated their careers to protecting the lives of those who live, work, learn, pray and play in our community.”

Fisher is an Air Force Security Forces veteran and has worked in law enforcement for 28 years. He has served in various roles including patrol supervisor, canine unit supervisor, SWAT team sniper team leader and trainer.
