Warning: Beware of the Sunshine State

This is a warning to anyone thinking about moving to Florida. The government does not recognize anyone who identifies as a part of the LGBQ+ community. Women's health is under attack, doctors can be arrested for providing care. Teachers can be fired for teaching this country's true, racist history. I am worried for today's children. The state has literature bans that deprive young student's knowledge and understanding about race, gender, and sexual orientation. I fear an endless cycle of hate, where the young generations of today end up as small minded as those running our state.

Gov. Ron DeSantis' signing bill banning state funding for diversity, equity and inclusion programs at Florida's public colleges and universities is one event that has prompted "travel advisories" and warnings against coming to Florida.

Treat all of the Constitution equally

The GOP MAGA followers will not only show or voice allegiance for a born loser but also get upset when the other side talks about banning assault weapons after another mass shooting. Don't dare infringe on my Second Amendment rights. But, when the liberals bring up Section 3 of the 14th amendment which says "no one who has engaged in an insurrection or rebellion or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof is not allowed to to hold public office?" Are we that blind not see that Trump's actions on Jan. 6 fit that definition? It's sad that all amendments of the Constitution are not treated equally.

For a Haley-Whitmer presidential contest

I  tend to agree with David Brooks’ column “Nikki Haley is he best GOP option… .” However, I do not believe he went far enough about Americans' frustration with our next presidential election. Most Americans voted for Joe Biden in 2020 because they had had enough of Donald Trump.  Most Americans today do not want a rematch of Biden and Trump.  My question is why aren’t any capable Democratic governors entering the democratic primaries? I always thought President Biden would be a one-term transition president. I personally would like to see someone like Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer put her hat in the ring. Wouldn’t all voters and our country be better served with a presidential race between Haley and Witmer instead of Biden and Trump?

No-pets policy is common sense

I, for one, applaud Publix's "new" no-pets policy. I have nothing against all animals, and certainly about folks keeping them as pets. However, I've noticed a marked increase in the presence of pets (mostly dogs) in restaurants, shops and indoor spaces where they really shouldn't be. I suppose that many of these places are welcoming folks that will likely spend money if they can enter with their animal — but really? We recently did some air travel and were astounded at the number of animals that were present in the airport and on the plane — are all of them actually "service" pets? While eating dinner at a local restaurant recently, a dog that was being kept on a chair in a carrying case began whining and barking right next to my wife and I. We were shocked that the animal was just a few feet from our table, and that it was OK with both the owner and the restaurant. It would be helpful if more places would clarify and post restrictions on allowing "pets" into indoor spaces.
