Warren, King secure reelection; Other election results

May 7—Saturday's 148th running of the Kentucky Derby culminated in one of the biggest shockers of that race's long history. By contrast, upsets were nowhere to be found during that same day's Cleburne City Council and Cleburne ISD school board races. The incumbents won in both races.

In the Cleburne City Council Single Member District 4 race, Councilman John Warren collected 45 votes and held off challenger Francisco "Frank" Aguero, who collected 18 votes.

City races for Mayor Scott Cain and SMD 1 Councilman Derek Weathers were canceled as neither attracted an opponent.

In the School Board Trustee Place 7 race, Trustee DeAnna King retained her seat by garnering 654 votes. King's challengers, Ginger Galban and James Stuer collected 121 and 83 votes respectively.

Trustee Elizabeth Childress, who ran for reelection unopposed, collected 752 votes in the Place 6 race.

Warren, who cited experience in his reelection bid, now enters his 12th consecutive term on the council.

"I want to thank the people for still having confidence in me," Warren said after Saturday's final numbers were announced. "I want to thank everyone who voted for me and also want to thank all those who voted for my opponent. It shows that they have an interest in what's going on in our city and I serve them also.

Although happy to have won reelection, Warren said he was less than thrilled by the low voter turnout of only 63 ballots cast in the race.

"Well sure, you'd like to see more people get involved and vote," Warren said. "Unfortunately, it shows I think that there's less interest in our government even locally and nationally and that's not a good thing for our nation. But people are frustrated right now and I understand that.

"But I thank the constituents in SMD 4 and thank the people in Cleburne for their confidence in me because I not only serve the residents of SMD 4 but I serve Cleburne overall. But I'm ready to go again and keep working for the residents."

Burleson bonds pass

Burleson voters approved two city bond issuances in Saturday's special bond election.

A proposal to issue $33,645,000 in bonds for street and road improvements and an accompanying tax levy sufficient to pay principle and interest on those bonds passed by a vote of 931 to 840.

The second bond proposal — $52,360,000 for construction, improvements and equipment purchases for city public safety facilities — passed by a more narrow margin of 897 to 874. That proposal also calls for a tax levy.

Alvarado ISD bonds

Voters passed two Alvarado ISD bonds by large margins. Proposition A passed by a vote of 335 to 121. Proposition B by a vote of 300 to 163.

The bonds, totaling $125 million, will go toward construction of a new elementary school, renovations to two existing elementary schools, a new gym and new baseball and softball fields.

"We are thankful for the community's support in this first step in the long-term vision the Facility Steering Committee has for AISD," Superintendent Kenneth Estes said. "It is an exciting time to be an Alvarado Indian, and what happened tonight will benefit not only our current students but Alvarado scholars for generations to come."

Joshua ISD bonds

Two propositions on the ballot from Joshua ISD are pending. Results were not available as of 11 p.m.
