Warriors claim sixth straight county golf title; Leopards' Bushey is low medalist
Andrew Bushey climbed to the top of the Washington County high school golf mountain on Thursday.
The Boonsboro golf team remained firmly planted on the summit.
Bushey, a Smithsburg senior, birdied three of the final five holes to finish a 1-under-par round of 71 at Black Rock, winning the Washington County Public Schools Tournament low-medalist honors by seven strokes.
“I made some good chips and made a couple of putts,” said Bushey, who birdied 14, 16 and 18 to finish his round with a flourish. “I hit a good shot on 14, hit a really good chip and had a 3-footer for birdie. I surprised myself there. Then I hit a good shot coming in on 18 to 4 feet.”
“He can chip and putt, and he's steady from the tee,” said Leopards coach Darren Weaver. “If he putts better on the front nine, he probably shoots 4 under. He had a couple that just missed.”
The Warriors extended their county record to six straight team championships, finishing with 335 strokes to end 14 strokes ahead of runner-up South Hagerstown. Senior Liam Ryan led Boonsboro with a 78, followed by senior Bryce Hartle (81), freshman Piper Meredith (83) and a pair of players who tied for the fourth and final team scoring spot, Nick McAboy and Zach Kidd (93 each).
“For us, it's just next man up,” said Boonsboro coach John Miller. “You play six (players) for a reason. Any day, someone is going to have a good day and someone is going to have a bad day. But they're all very consistent. We pretty much know what we're going to get.
“Six in a row is pretty good, there's no doubt about that.”
North Hagerstown senior Jimmy Goldsborough shot a 78 to tie Ryan for second place in the individual standings. Hartle placed fourth with his 81, while Meredith, Williamsport's Ryan Acre Jr. and South's Luke Leisinger tied for fifth with their 83s.
Williamsport junior Kei Mumma had the shot of the day. His tee shot on the par-3 17th landed just short of the green, but took a hard kick forward and straight into the hole for his first-ever ace.
“I was like, 'It looks a little short,' but it got a little kick and went in,” Mumma said. “My jaw dropped. (Playing partners Kadan Jones of Boonsboro and Daniel Thomas of South) were all like, 'No way! Good job!' They couldn't believe it.”
