Warriors earn softball sweep

Mar. 22—MANSFIELD — Carley Stoker pitched her second consecutive complete- game 1- hit shutout in the opener and recorded a save in the nightcap as the Eastern Connecticut State University softball team swept a nonleague doubleheader over Trinity, 8- 0 in six innings and 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Clyde Washburne Field.

Stoker ( 2- 0) allowed a 2- out single in the third inning of the opener, struck out two and walked five for the No. 15 nationally- ranked Warriors (3-0).

Cassie Woods reached base six times on the afternoon, including four times in Game 1, scored three runs and stole three bases. On the season, Woods, a graduate transfer from Keene State College, is hitting .667 (6-for-9) with seven runs scored and four stolen bases.

Junior Brooke Matyasovsky recorded the win in Game 2 after allowing just one run in five innings. She also hit the 13th home run of her career, a solo shot leading off the bottom of the fifth in Game 1.

ECSU hosts Rhode Island College for a doubleheader in its Little East Conference opener Tuesday at 3 p. m.

BASEBALL ECSU sweeps MANSFIELD — Jack Rich hit a 2- run home run during a 4-run third inning of Game 2 to help lead Eastern Connecticut to an 11- 3 victory over St Joseph's College of Maine for a non- conference doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

Rich Bagdasarian, Ryan Bagdasarian and Matt Malcom all drove in two runs as the Warriors (3-0) scored in five different innings to complete the sweep and improve to 15- 2 all- time against the Monks (2-6).

Nolan Lincoln struck out three, allowing one hit over two innings of relief, to pick up the win.

In the opener, Josh Vincent, a second- year Division II transfer from Chowan University ( N. C.) scattered five hits and allowed one run over the final five innings in relief to pick up the win on the mound as the Warriors prevailed, 5- 4.

ECSU, which trailed 3- 1 after 2 i/t innings, scored once

in the bottom of the third and tied the game at 3- all in the fourth on a RBI double by Holden White. Luke Broadhurst (2 hits, 2 RBI) put the Warriors ahead to stay with a 2- out RBI triple in the fifth that brought home Rich.

Malcom ( 2 hits, 3 runs, RBI) made it 5- 3 on a solo home run leading off the bottom of the eighth.

The Monks scored once in the top of the ninth and had the tying run on second base before Vincent ended the game with a strikeout.

The Warriors visit Johnson & Wales University Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader.

Cara Jordan and Jada Konte each had assists for the Huskies, who host Villanova on Thursday at 2 p.m.

SOFTBALL Sanden powers Huskies OMAHA, Neb. — Jana Sanden cracked two home runs with six RBI as UConn downed Crieghton, 10-5, Sunday in a Big East Conference game.

Sanden put the Huskies (9-10 overall, 2-1 league) ahead to stay with a 3- run home run in the top of the third.

Madisyn Estorga added a 2- run home run in the fifth. Payton Kinney struck out five in six innings of relief to record the win.

UConn hosts Central Connecticut State University on Wednesday.
