Warriors’ Jonathan Kuminga ‘closer’ to doing on-court work

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr on Sunday said rookie Jonathan Kuminga is not yet ready to begin on-court work as he recovers from a patellar tendon strain in his right knee.

Kuminga suffered the injury on Oct. 6 in the fourth quarter against the Denver Nuggets. The exact play when it occurred is not known but he left the game under his own power and would not return.

He missed the Warriors’ final three games of the preseason.

The Warriors on Friday announced that Kuminga would be re-evaluated in one week but he could miss additional time following the latest update from Kerr.

Jonathan is getting closer to being able to start doing some stuff on the floor. (He is) not there yet, though.

The seventh overall pick played sparingly with the Warriors during his two preseason games. He registered just eight points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal in 17 minutes between his two appearances, only playing in the second half in each contest.

The Warriors will certainly be cautious with Kuminga and allow him to be fully healthy before returning to play. The team is also still in the process of determining his role for this season so his absence will not impact the team too much.

Golden State opens up the regular season on Tuesday versus the Los Angeles Lakers.
