ZIP Codes In Wash Heights Have The Top 2 COVID Rates In Manhattan

UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — Neighboring ZIP codes in Upper Manhattan are home to the first and second highest coronavirus rates in the borough, according to new data released by the city Friday afternoon.

The new data, which provides COVID-19 virus testing results for every New York City ZIP code between Nov. 11 and Nov. 17, shows the percentage of coronavirus tests coming back positive in the 10040 and 10033 ZIP codes are the highest in Manhattan.

Starting with the 10040 ZIP code, which has remained the top COVID rate in the borough since Nov. 11, and momentarily jumped up to the second-highest positivity rate in all of New York City on Monday at 5.23 percent.

According to the most recent data, the coronavirus positivity rate in the ZIP code that makes up the northern section of Washington Heights and Inwood has dropped slightly.

Residents in 10040 had a positivity rate of 4.23 during the week of Nov. 11 through Nov 17, down from the 5.23 percent rate seen from Nov. 6 through Nov. 12.

The figure is still the highest in Manhattan.

However, as the coronavirus positivity rate drops slightly in one Upper Manhattan ZIP code, a different Washington Heights area has seen its coronavirus positivity rate continue to go up.

The 10033 ZIP code, which sits at the heart of Washington Heights, has a 4.2 positivity rate, according to the most recent data.

It is the second highest rate in Manhattan from Nov. 11 to Nov. 17.

The ZIP code's new positivity rate is up from the 3.73 percent rate registered in the area from Nov. 6 to Nov. 12.

Here is the updated COVID-19 data in the four ZIP codes that make up Inwood and Washington Heights.

  • 10034 — Inwood/Washington Heights: 1,128 people tested, 37 new cases, 3.28 percent positivity.

  • 10040 — Washington Heights (North): 1,205 people tested, 51 new cases, 4.23 percent positivity.

  • 10033 — Washington Heights (North/South): 1,692 people tested, 71 new cases, 4.2 percent rate.

  • 10032 — Washington Heights (South): 1,972 people tested, 63 new cases, 3.19 percent rate.

Overall, the average rate in the four ZIP codes between Nov. 11 to Nov. 17 was 3.72 percent, and there were 222 new cases.

The most recent one-week average in Upper Manhattan is up slightly from the 3.60 percent rate between Nov. 6 to Nov. 12.
