Washburn drops two games at Fort Hays State

HAYS (KSNT) – Ichabod men’s and women’s basketball took on some of the best teams in the MIAA.

Washburn men’s basketball fell to Fort Hays State, 71-58. The women lost to the No. 19 Tigers, 70-45.

Men’s recap:

The Tigers snapped Washburn’s three-game win streak. The Ichabods (12-6, 8-4 MIAA) led 35-34 at the half, after the Tigers ended it on a 7-0 run.

Fort Hays State has the No. 1 scoring defense in the country. In the second half, it went on a 23-5 run to hold the Ichabods scoreless for almost seven minutes. Washburn trailed, 61-44, with 9:03 to play. The ‘Bods cut the lead to 12 after Michael Keegan made a lay up and a 3-pointer, but they couldn’t get any closer than 12 points from the lead the rest of the way.

Andrew Orr led the Ichabods with 13 points, pulling down seven rebounds and adding two blocks. Jack Bachelor finished with 11 points, hitting three of the team’s five 3-pointers.

Women’s recap:

Washburn trailed by just two at halftime, but couldn’t keep up offensively in the second half.

The No. 19 Tigers came out of halftime on a 7-0 run. Aubree Dewey ended it with a layup, but it was the last field goal of the quarter for the Ichabods. Fort Hays shot 8-17 in the third quarter and turned Washburn over six times. The ‘Bods went into the fourth quarter down 52-31.

Neither team scored for the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Washburn (11-7, 6-6 MIAA) got its first basket from Amaya Davison with 5:30 left. The Tigers shot 7-12 in the quarter and pushed their lead to as many as 28 points before winning, 70-45.
