Smithsburg’s Lexi Zimmerman and Clear Spring’s Clayton Boyer voted Athletes of the Week

Smithsburg’s Lexi Zimmerman and Clear Spring’s Clayton Boyer were voted The Herald-Mail’s Washington County Athletes of the Week for May 9-14.

The voting was conducted online Monday morning through noon Thursday.

Zimmerman, a senior sprinter on the Leopards’ track team, earned the girls honor with 37.98% of the vote (169 votes). She won the 100 (12.93), 200 (26.45) and 400 (59.69) in personal-record times and anchored the 4x400 relay to a come-from-behind victory, leading Smithsburg to the girls team title at the county championships.

Boyer, a senior baseball player, was the boys winner with 45.07% of the vote (256 votes). He pitched six shutout innings, allowing four hits while striking out seven, in a 5-0 win over Boonsboro in the 1A West Region II semifinals.

The other boys nominees were Smithsburg lacrosse player Clark Smith and North Hagerstown track and field athlete Jake Scallion.

The other girls nominees were South Hagerstown softball player Madi Wade and Williamsport tennis player Lauren Toms.
