Washington County to look greener as Metro supports local open spaces

(PORTLAND TRIBUNE) — The Metro Council has awarded $2.3 million in grants to 15 parks and nature projects that were imagined, developed and voted for by community members in the Portland metropolitan region.

These green spaces are all in Washington County. Metro is the regional government serving the urban portions of Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties, and its duties range from solid waste disposal, to maintaining greenspaces, to running the Oregon Zoo.

The grants, ranging from $88,400 to $166,667, come from the voter-approved 2019 parks and nature bond measure. This first round of funding focused on Metro Council District 4, which includes the Washington County cities of Hillsboro, Forest Grove and Cornelius, as well as most areas of urban Washington County north of the Tualatin Valley Highway.

“When our communities are given the opportunity to shape priorities in their backyards, good things happen,” Metro Councilor Juan Carlos Gonzalez said. The greenspaces are within his Metro district.
