Washington County man $100,000 richer after buying Lottery bingo scratcher in Boonsboro

Loyalty paid off for a Washington County man who won the $100,000 top prize on a Bingo X10 scratch-off ticket bought in Boonsboro, according to a news release from the Maryland Lottery.

The man, described as a 48-year-old construction worker who lives in a small town south of Hagerstown, purchased the winning ticket in late October at a grocery store.

“The machine in Weis Markets had a bingo game, so I bought a couple,” he told the lottery.

Maryland Lottery regulations allow winners to remain anonymous.

The man scratched the tickets, worth $10 a piece, when he got home later.

“I win often enough with bingo tickets to not be that surprised when it happens, but this was different,” he told Lottery officials.

He examined the scratch-off two or three times before calling out to his wife, “I think I hit the jackpot here.”

The couple told Lottery officials they were stunned. “It was just unbelievable. We couldn’t believe it was real,” the winner said in the news release.

The man said he regularly plays the bingo-style scratchers.

“I get one or two every week,” he said in the release. “I enjoy the time they take to play. It makes them feel more worthwhile, somehow."

What is Bingo X10?

Bingo X10 debuted last summer with seven $100,000 top prizes. This win is the game’s next-to-last top prize. There also are four $10,000 second-tier prizes available and others ranging from $10 to $1,000.

The Lottery will send Weis Markets No. 178 at 700 Chase Six Blvd. in Boonsboro a $1,000 bonus for selling the top-prize winning scratch-off.

The winner told Lottery officials he plans to use his $100,000 windfall to pay off debt and add to his savings.

“We’ll put some of it aside to have a fun weekend or two, though,” he said.
