Summer is winding down and students soon will be heading back to Washington County schools to start the 2023-24 school year.

As parents and families head to the stores for back-to-school shopping, they should be reminded they can save money by shopping during Oklahoma's annual tax-free weekend. The sales tax holiday weekend will begin Friday, Aug. 4, and end at midnight Sunday, Aug. 6.

During this time, the state sales tax of 4.5% will be completely waived, and even county and municipal taxes will be exempted, resulting in a higher overall discount for shoppers.

To qualify for tax exemption, sales of clothing or footwear must be priced lower than $100. The tax exemption doesn't apply to accessories, special clothing or footwear primarily designed for athletics or rental of athletic apparel rental. In addition, sales of jewelry, handbags, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, watches and similar items are also not tax-exempt under the law.

For more specifics, visit the State of Oklahoma website.
