Report: Redskins RB Derrius Guice questionable for training camp after hamstring injury

Washington Redskins running back Derrius Guice may have hit a snag in his recovery this offseason.

Guice, who missed all of last year with a torn ACL, tweaked his hamstring earlier this summer and is now questionable for the start of training camp later this month, according to the NFL Network.

While it’s unclear how bad the latest injury is, it marks yet another setback for the former LSU standout who has yet to play in the NFL.

Guice, though, doesn’t sound too worried himself.

Guice was selected in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft, but injured his ACL in the first quarter of Washington’s preseason opener last fall. He ran for 1,251 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Tigers in his final collegiate season, his last full year on the field.

The 22-year-old was expected to be available for training camp in less than two weeks despite his injury and the infection that followed, which set him back in his recovery even more. While it sounds like, from both the NFL Network and Guice himself, the latest injury isn’t too serious, it’s still a significant cause for concern given his injury history over the past year. Based on that alone, the Redskins have little reason to rush him back to the field.

Washington will now likely have to lean more on Adrian Peterson in the backfield to start the season. The 34-year-old re-signed with the Redskins earlier this year after a 1,000-yard season last fall, his first since 2015.

Guice was expected to compete for significant playing time with Peterson, which would have given the Redskins a solid running attack this fall. Now, though, it appears that Guice will have to wait even longer for his first snap in the NFL.
