Is Washington a viable free agency destination for Texans WR Will Fuller?
The Houston Texans have a decision to make when it comes to receiver Will Fuller, whose contract is set to expire. However, the former 2016 first-round pick from Notre Dame may have a variety of options to explore if he hits the open market.
According to Gil Brandt on NFL.com, one team to keep an eye on for Fuller’s services would be Washington, the NFC East champions in 2020. Although Brandt admits Fuller probably wouldn’t be the top receiver in Washington’s pursuits, he could add something special alongside wideout Terry McLaurin.
Let me say that Fuller might not be the top receiver option for Washington, but he might be the most viable, presuming the Bears use the franchise tag to keep Allen Robinson from the open market and Curtis Samuel, as I suggest above, is signed by the Jaguars. Fuller has a lengthy injury history and will miss the 2021 season-opener as he finishes a suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy, but he’s also coming off the best statistical season of his career, even though he only played in 11 games, posting 53 catches for 879 yards (16.6 yards per catch) and eight TDs. When he’s healthy, Fuller is something special. His game-breaking skills would serve as the perfect complement to Terry McLaurin, who was essentially a one-man band in 2020, recording more catches by himself (87) than the next three Washington receivers on the stat sheet (Cam Sims, Isaiah Wright and Steven Sims combined for 86).
If Fuller were to team up with McLaurin, it would help out whoever they put under center at quarterback, including Taylor Heinicke. What Fuller will have to consider if he hits free agency is whether or not Deshaun Watson will stay with the Texans. If Watson leaves, it behooves Fuller to leave also and latch on to a team with a capable quarterback that can get the most out of his production.
