Watch This 1000-HP Subaru BRAT Throw Down a Seven-Second Quarter-Mile Run

The Subaru BRAT was a quirky 4x4 pickup sold in the '70s and '80s, known for its interesting looks, unique body style, and rear-facing jump seats. It was never particularly fast in its period, but that hasn't stopped one owner, Australian Errol Brittain, from taking his Brat to the absolute limit on the drag strip.

This BRAT (known as the Brumby in Australia) is packing a turbocharged 2.5-liter Subaru EJ25 engine running on methanol. According to Engine Swap Depot, it sends torque to the rear wheels via a Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission and a Ford nine-inch rear end.

Despite the four-figure horsepower number, it looked surprisingly tame as it ran down the strip at Willowbank Racway in Queensland, Australia, setting a time of 7.95 seconds at 168 mph.
