What is 101 Dalmatians about?

Based on the novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians, by Dodie Smith, 101 Dalmatians is a story about love—between romantic partners as well as love between people and their dogs. And it’s endured for more than half a century, in large part, because of its unforgettable villain: Cruella de Vil.

When a male Dalmatian named Pongo falls for a female Dalmatian called Perdita, he leads his owner, Roger, into a meet-cute with Perdita’s owner, Anita. And so the two pairs find their counterparts, and form a happy little family in London. Soon enough, however, that family gets a bit bigger when Perdita gives birth to a litter of 15 puppies. Enter the vile Cruella de Vil, a wealthy longtime acquaintance of Anita’s with a fondness for fur coats. She offers to buy the whole litter of puppies from Roger and Anita, and when the couple refuses, de Vil sends a pair of hired goons to steal the Dalmatians, intending to harvest them for their fur. There are some dark, real-world themes at play here, but you can mostly expect lots of family-friendly fun and a joyous ending. This film has withstood the test of time for good reason.

In addition to a legendary soundtrack by composer George Bruns, 101 Dalmatians features the voice-over talents of Rod Taylor (The Birds), Betty Lou Gerson (The Fly), Ben Wright (The Sound of Music), Frederick Worlock (Spartacus), and Thurl Ravenscroft (The Brave Little Toaster), among others.
