Watch: American family accidentally drives through pedestrian area in Munich

An American family found themselves where no tourists ever want to be – accidentally driving around a pedestrian area in Munich.

Mallory Johnson captured the unexpected moment in a video that’s garnered more than 2 millions views on TikTok.

“Look at everybody staring,” a voice in the car says as they slowly drive past onlookers in Marienplatz, an iconic square in the heart of the German city.

“Oh, it’s OK,” says another, who appears to be the dad at the wheel. The video is captioned “american dad takes on family european vacation” with the hashtags #cultureshock, #sorry, #foreigncountry and #dads, among others.

At another point in Johnson’s video, someone warns, “Dad, careful careful careful” as they try to navigate between pedestrians to find a way out.

Johnson told Storyful no one was hurt, and officials were lenient and didn’t fine them for the error.

A number of European cities have car-free zones, and some entire destinations, like Venice, are car free. The same goes for parts of the U.S. like Maine’s Monhegan Island and sometimes even stretches of New York City.

“I thought it was weird to have a flower pot in the middle of the road,” yet another voice is heard saying in Johnson’s video.

Travelers can always ask local tourism offices for directions and clarity.
