How to watch, attend Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's 2nd inauguration

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's inauguration is slated for New Year's Day, and the celebration of her second four-year term is set to cause some excitement in downtown Lansing.

Read on so you know how to attend or avoid the event.

Whitmer will be sworn in at 10:30 a.m. Sunday to begin her final four-year term as governor. Also taking the oath of office will be a slew of other state officials including Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Attorney General Dana Nessel, and justices for the Michigan Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, all of whom were elected on Nov. 8.

Plans have not been finalized on which TV stations will carry the inauguration in the Greater Lansing area. Both WILX and WLNS confirmed their websites will live stream the event. MichiganStrong.org, the inauguration website, will carry a live stream of the event.

Can I attend the inauguration?

Yes.

You must RSVP for a free ticket to the inauguration on MichiganStrong.org. Entrance to the event begins at 9 a.m. and access is only permitted at the corner of Allegan Street and Capitol Avenue, according to the website.

According to a release from Whitmer's office, attendees are encouraged to arrive early and be seated on the eastern part of the Capitol lawn.

It is billed to be a family-friendly event with the ceremony starting at 10:30 a.m. The National Weather Service predicts New Year's Day to be mostly cloudy with a high in the low 40s, so dress for the weather. The night before is expected to have showers.

Bobby Leddy, Whitmer's communications specialist, said attendees can bring jackets and blankets to sit on the lawn. Michigan State Police have employed a no-fly zone around the Capitol.

The Michigan Strong committee is sponsoring admission to Impression 5 Science Center from noon to 4 p.m. that day as well, he added.

What will traffic detours look like?

According to the city of Lansing's website, the following road closures are in place from 6:30 a.m. to around 3:30 p.m.:

  • Capitol Avenue, between Washtenaw and Ionia streets;

  • Allegan Street, between Washington Square and Pine Street;

  • Townsend Street, for through traffic between Washtenaw and Allegan streets;

  • Walnut Street, between Washtenaw and Ottawa streets;

  • Ottawa Street, for through traffic between Chestnut Street and Seymour Avenue;

  • Michigan Avenue, from Washington Square to Capitol Avenue.

City officials encourage all event traffic to enter downtown Lansing via Saginaw Street.

Street parking is free on New Year's Day because of the holiday, Scott Beat, Lansing's spokesperson, said. Parking is available at Lansing's North Grand ramp, 219 N. Grand Ave., for $3 an hour, according to the city's parking division.

What can I do if I want to visit downtown Lansing?

Leddy added attendees will be able to watch a roller skating demonstration and live ice sculpting on the Capitol lawn. Various other games and refreshments will be available as well.
