Watch Ben Affleck Get Emotional Talking About His Divorce From Jennifer Garner

Ben Affleck isn’t done opening up about his divorce from Jennifer Garner.

The actor, currently on an emotional press tour for his film The Way Back, sat down with Diane Sawyer for Good Morning America to talk about his sobriety, divorce, and that TMZ video.

When asked about that last one—a video that was released this past October and appeared to show a sobriety setback for Affleck—the actor/director revealed he only watched part of it. “I know what it looks like to be drunk,” he told Sawyer. “I don’t need to watch any more of it.”

The most emotional part of the interview came when he started discussing the end of his marriage to Garner. To him, it was the hardest thing to admit to himself. “I never thought that I was gonna get divorced. I didn’t want to get divorced. I didn’t want to be a divorced person. I really didn’t want to be a split family with my children,” he says, choking back tears. “And it upset me because it meant I wasn’t who I thought I was. And that was so painful and so disappointing in myself.”

Affleck and Garner, who share three children, signed divorce papers in October 2018 after first splitting in June 2015 after 10 years of marriage. In a new profile with the New York Times, Affleck said, “The biggest regret of my life is this divorce.”

But whether it’s his divorce or his struggles with alcoholism (he is now sober), Affleck doesn’t plan to wallow in his mistakes. “Shame is really toxic. There is no positive by-product of shame. It’s just stewing in a toxic, hideous feeling of low self-worth and self-loathing,” Affleck said. “It’s not particularly healthy for me to obsess over the failures—the relapses—and beat myself up. I have certainly made mistakes. I have certainly done things that I regret. But you’ve got to pick yourself up, learn from it, learn some more, try to move forward.”
