U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley and challenger Mike Franken meet Thursday night for an hourlong debate on Iowa PBS, in the only scheduled debate in this year's U.S. Senate race.

Grassley, a Republican, is seeking his eighth term in the U.S. Senate. Franken, a Democrat and retired U.S. Navy admiral, is challenging Grassley in the Nov. 8 general election. Early voting begins Oct. 19.

The debate begins at 7 p.m. and airs statewide on Iowa PBS and online at iowapbs.org.

The debate is moderated by "Iowa Press" host Kay Henderson, Des Moines Register Chief Politics Reporter Brianne Pfannenstiel and The Gazette's Des Moines Bureau Chief Erin Murphy.

A July Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll showed Grassley leading Franken by 8 percentage points, 47% to 39%. That margin is narrower than in any Iowa Poll matchup involving Grassley since he was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1980.

As of July, the most recent time candidates reported their fundraising totals, Grassley had about $4 million in the bank compared to Franken's $1.1 million.

Both candidates have been advertising on statewide television, airing a mix of positive ads introducing themselves to Iowans and negative ads criticizing their opponents' positions.
