Watch: Crack pipes found in back pocket of former Ohio State quarterback

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The former Ohio State quarterback facing drug charges after a traffic stop asked multiple times if troopers knew who he was before crack pipes were found in his jeans pocket.

Body camera footage released Thursday by the Ohio State Highway Patrol showed the stop troopers made of Art Schlichter, 63, who played for the Buckeyes from 1978 to ’81 and then in the NFL before later serving 10 years in prison for gambling-related crimes.

Schlichter, who was on probation at the time of the stop, could be facing more prison time.

Troopers Brian Garloch and Andrew Chapman found Schlichter at about 4:20 a.m. on Feb. 2 near East Hudson Street and Hamilton Avenue in Columbus’ Linden neighborhood. The vehicle Schlichter was in was in the roadway but toward the right side. He had just run over what appeared to be an object that damaged his front right tire.

“I hit that thing right there,” Schlichter said. “It slashed my tire.”

Garloch — whose body camera recorded the interaction — shined a flashlight in the car and then inspected the damage. He later remarked that the axel had snapped. That didn’t stop Schlichter several times from trying to see if he could get the car to move.

“You got an ID on you, man?” Garloch asked Schlichter.

“I do not, but I’m Art Schlichter. You ever heard of me?” he said, before repeating himself and turning toward Chapman. “Art Schlichter?”

Garloch took Schlichter’s social security number, and Schlichter told him he was on probation.

“Gambling,” Schlichter said. “I did 10 years.”

Garloch returned to his squad car, apparently looking up information on Schlichter. Upon returning, Schlichter was still making efforts to somehow move the car from the road. Garloch went to perform a search of Schlichter, which he didn’t object to, and pulled two used crack pipes from a back pocket. Garloch said he had also noticed what he called drug paraphernalia on the floorboard of the car.

The video concluded with troopers placing Schlichter in the back of their car while telling him he was not being arrested.

Court records showed that if Schlichter violated his probation that he could be sent to prison for 11 months. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
