Watch out for the cyclists as this Bellingham tradition will slow roads Saturday

With the Padden Triathlon in Bellingham on Saturday, June 25, drivers should expect to see bicyclists on Samish Way, Old Samish Road and Lake Samish Drive in both the morning and the afternoon.

Meanwhile, travelers headed south on Interstate 5 through Seattle should plan for lane and ramp closures that continue through 5 a.m. Monday, June 27.

Two lanes of southbound I-5 will be open while contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation replace expansion joints on southbound I-5 south of I-90.

WSDOT said closures are slated for:

The collector/distributor to southbound I-5. Drivers will be able to use the collector/distributor to exit, but they will have to exit by Airport Way.

The east and westbound I-90 on-ramps to southbound I-5.

The Spring and James street on-ramps will go into the collector/distributor, but not continue onto southbound I-5.

This work is part of WSDOT’s Revive I-5, a multi-year effort to rehabilitate sections of the nearly 60-year-old interstate through Seattle and King and Snohomish counties.

Roads this week

These projects will slow drivers locally and along the I-5 corridor south this weekend and in the coming week:

Pavement striping is scheduled at 5 a.m. Thursday, June 30, on Slater Road from the Ferndale city limits to Lake Terrell Road. Long delays are expected.

Whatcom County road crews have started their seasonal chip-sealing work. These roads are scheduled for chip sealing from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, June 27, through Thursday, June 30: Forest Street, Frost Road, Heady Road, Paradise Valley Road, Reese Hill Road, Sealund Road, Second Street, Silver Lake Road, South Pass Road, Woodshire Road. Drivers are urged to use alternate routes and expect long delays when work is in progress. Residents are asked to relocate any vehicles parked in the right-of-way along these roads before 6 a.m. when chip sealing is scheduled.

Crews will be paving parts of the North Cascades Highway from Rockport to east of Winthrop this summer. Work will go from east to west and drivers should expect delays. A pilot car will direct traffic through some areas of the work zone and flaggers will direct traffic through other areas. Pilot car operation is limited to a 15-minute maximum hold time.

Expect delays through summer on the North Cascades Highway (Highway 20) from Sedro-Woolley to Newhalem as flood-damage repairs continue.

Delays and single-lane closures are likely from mowing and ditch work on Lake Louise Road from Austin Street to Lake Whatcom Boulevard through Friday, June 24. Drivers are urged to use Lake Whatcom Boulevard instead.

Artist Point clearing continues, but an opening date could be several weeks away because of heavy snow, WSDOT officials said.

Marine Drive work continues north of Bellingham with lane closure delays of up to 20 minutes between Alderwood and Locust avenues for the next several weeks. Detour signs are in place.

If you’re heading to Canada, officials urge travelers to check border wait times. Early morning hours have less congestion. Travelers should have their ArriveCAN receipt; passport or travel documents, proof of vaccination; and identification for everyone in the vehicle.
