Cruella de Vil is one of the most iconic Disney villains—at the very least, she has one of the best theme songs (second, perhaps, only to “Hellfire” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame). The tale of the fur-coat clad villainess from 101 Dalmatians is one of the most classic Disney stories, and in the vein of 2014’s Maleficent, Cruella is getting the opportunity to tell her side of the story this year.

Cruella, the Cruella de Vil origin story, which was initially slated to be released in theaters only, is now available for streaming on Disney+ or in theaters.

What is Cruella about?

Cruella explores the origins of the classic Disney villain in an all-new live-action story starring Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil and Emma Thompson as the Baroness, in addition to Mark Strong. The story precedes the events of 101 Dalmatians and follows Cruella’s rise to fashion royalty and general villainy. From the trailer, it looks as though the story explores why Cruella becomes the antagonist of the 101 Dalmatians franchise.

Cruella won’t be the first live-action adaptation for the 101 Dalmatians franchise—two live-action films followed the original animated film, starring Glenn Close in the role of Cruella de Vil. You can find the original animated 101 Dalmatians as well as the live-action 101 Dalmatians and 102 Dalmatians on Disney+. You can pay $30 with Premier Access to access Cruella when it is released to Disney+ on May 28, 2021.
