How to Watch: Florida baseball at Ole Miss Rebels on Sunday

Florida baseball travels to take on the Ole Miss Rebels on Sunday, March 25, for the third of a three-game weekend Southeastern Conference series inside Oxford-University Stadium at Swayze Field in Oxford, Mississippi, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Gators got off to s strong start in non-conference play before earning a series win over the Alabama Crimson Tide in Condron Family Ballpark last weekend before taking a single midweek game from the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee on Tuesday. The Orange and Blue swept a doubleheader on Saturday to clinch this weekend’s series with the Rebels and look to seal the sweep with a win this afternoon.

Pitcher Notes

Jac Caglianone had the worst start of his college career last Friday, but it wasn’t a complete disaster. Five runs off five hits in five innings is a  welcome to the SEC moment, but Caglianone can recover this week with a decent outing. On the other hand, there might be a legitimate reason to worry if he struggles against a second conference opponent in a row.

Left-hander Xavier Rivas is an interesting story. He threw in the 70s as a junior in high school and two years later is up to 92 mph and starting for the defending national champions. He dazzled at the University of Indianapolis and has seen mixed results in five starts with the Rebels. He held Vanderbilt to just one hit a week ago, and kept Purdue at one run through six innings. This could be an interesting matchup for Florida.

Rivas has a curveball, slider and changeup to complement his fastball. As a lefty, the changeup breaks away from right-handed hitters and the slider attacks the inside of the plate near the batter’s back foot. — David Rosenberg

Other Players to Watch

Andrew Nelles / The Tennessean

Ole Miss has plenty of draft guys on the team, and the trio of catcher Calvin Harris, shortstop Jacob Gonzalez and outfielder Kemp Alderman might be at the top of that list. All three are batting above .340 and Alderman has nine home runs and 30 RBIs on the year.

Outfielder Ethan Groff is also sticking the ball really well and has 29 RBIs for the team. He leads the team with 10 stolen bases in 11 attempts as well.

The Rebels are prone to the strikeout, though. Only two players in the everyday lineup have walked more than they’ve struck out, Gonzalez and Groff. — Rosenberg

NOTES: Being on the road has not favored Florida in this series historically, but that might not matter too much this time around. The Gators are among the best teams in the country and can make a very loud statement by taking two of three from Ole Miss. — Rosenberg

Prediction

GAME 3: Ole Miss, 7-4

SERIES: Florida will likely lose one game of the doubleheader, but winning two over the weekend is good enough to claim the series. Sproat should get the first one out of the way without major issues, but Game 2 and 3 could go either way depending on who starts for Florida. Gators battle it out and come out on top in the series, 2-1. Rosenberg
