What to Watch Friday: How to stream the new Tom Hanks WWII movie ‘Greyhound’

The New York Times Presents: They Get Brave (10 p.m., FX and Hulu) - This new New York Times documentary series premieres tonight with the story of New York City doctors and nurses. The episode documents their lives during the coronavirus, capturing awe-inspiring resolve in the face of a breakdown in the health care system. A new episode of this series premieres each month. In August we get “This Is Dominic Fike: The Next Big Thing?” about a young pop singer preparing for his first international tour. Another future episode will tell the story of Louisville, Kentucky, EMT Breonna Taylor, the 27-year-old Black woman who was shot at least eight times and killed by police officers while she slept in her home in March.

Greyhound (Apple TV+) - A big budget film intended for the big screen, this Tom Hanks movie gets its debut on Apple TV+ instead, thanks to the closure of movie theaters because of the coronavirus pandemic. The World War II film focuses on the allied naval forces during the Battle of the Atlantic, and is based on C.S. Forester’s novel “The Good Shepherd.” Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan and Elisabeth Shue co-star in the movie, which has a screenplay by Hanks and was directed by Aaron Schneider. Hanks plays a Navy captain who must protect a convoy of 37 ships carrying soldiers and supplies across the Atlantic during the war in 1942, all while battling Nazi U-boats.
