What is The Incredibles about?

Brad Bird’s second feature as director was a colossal hit, combining Pixar’s technical craft with an aesthetic that’s somewhere near the intersection of the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons of the 1940s and classic James Bond. It’s a playful, winning combination that snagged $631 million at the global box office and led to an eventual 2018 sequel.

Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl have settled down to raise a family in the suburbs following a government-ordered ban on superheroes (“Supers”). When an old fan and wannabe sidekick of Mr. Incredible’s resurfaces as a supervillain calling himself “Syndrome,” the former heroes’ children—Violet, Dash, and even the infant Jack-Jack—are drawn into the fight.

The film features the voice-over talents of Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Vowell, Spencer Fox, Eli Fucile, Jason Lee, Samuel L. Jackson, and Elizabeth Peña.

“Most Pixar films have a healthy helping of sentiment and outright emotion pulling at our heartstrings and giving them greatness,” USA Today’s Kelly Lawler said in 2015. “The Incredibles is not like that. It’s simply a superhero movie, but one of the best ones to hit theaters in the past 20 years (yup, including The Dark Knight and The Avengers and all the rest). It’s a superhero movie about what it means to be a superhero, chock full of homages to the films that came before it. But because it’s Pixar, it’s also about marriage and family and finding our place in this crazy messed-up world.”
