This is the third time in eight years that the Wildcats have opened the season with the Coyotes. Kansas State won both previous recent meetings, winning 35-0 in 2015 but then needing a comeback victory to win a 27-24 battle against USD in 2018.

The Wildcats went 5-7 that year. Since then, for the most part, they've been much better. Excluding a 4-6 finish in 2020, Kansas State has two eight-win seasons since then, including one last year that ended with a 42-20 win in the Taxact Texas Bowl over LSU.

The Wildcats enter this year receiving votes in the FBS Top 25 after returning their top rusher (Deuce Vaughn), top pass-rusher (Felix Anudike-Uzomah) and top receiver (Phillip Brooks) who enters the 2022 season tied for first nationally among active players in career punt-return touchdowns.

What to know about Kansas State coach Chris Klieman

Kansas State coach Chris Klieman announced the addition of 13 players Wednesday on the opening day of the NCAA early signing period.
Kansas State coach Chris Klieman announced the addition of 13 players Wednesday on the opening day of the NCAA early signing period.

Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman has spent more time in the FCS than not during his college coaching career. Specifically, he's spent most of that time in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

In his 29 years of coaching, the Northern Iowa grad spent time in various roles at Northern Iowa, Western Illinois, Kansas, Missouri State, Loras College (his first head-coaching role) and North Dakota State, where after three years on the defensive staff, he took over as head coach of the perennial FCS title contender Bison.

He won four national championships in five years with NDSU. He was named Kansas State's 35th head coach on December 10, 2018 and has amassed 20 wins with the Wildcats.

Kansas State against the FCS

In the last five years, FCS teams have given Kansas State some problems. Though they've had a 4-0 record in those games, two teams — Southern Illinois and the 2018 Coyotes — have kept the margin of around a touchdown or fewer.

The other games have not been close, though. In 2019, K-State dominated Nicholls and 49-14 and did the same in 2017 by beating Central Arkansas 55-19. In the last five years, no FCS team has come closer to beating the Wildcats than USD.

South Dakota Coyotes quarterback Austin Simmons (3) celebrates with running back Canaan Brooks (25) after scoring for a touchdown against the Kansas State Wildcats at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

The Coyotes are coming off a historic season, hosting their first FCS playoff game in school history. The Coyotes have the most returning players on offense, returning quarterback Carson Camp, running back Travis Theis (and two more running backs who got carries last season), all but one member of the offensive line, wide receiver Carter Bell and tight end Austin Goehring, who often shared the field with 2021 starter Brett Samson.

On defense, South Dakota is younger, but returns both its cornerbacks, Myles Harden and Da’Raun McKinney, after each struggled with injuries last year, safety Josiah Ganues and defensive lineman Nick Gaes, who finished third in MVFC Freshman of the Year voting and led the conference in sacks.

South Dakota head coach Bob Nielson said Tuesday that he expects there to be a lot of rotation on the defensive line early in the season as the Coyotes develop more-firm depth at those positions. USD isn't given much time to figure things out in 2022, playing their most difficult matchups of the No. 1-ranked FCS Strength of Schedule in the first five games of the season.

South Dakota against the FBS

In the Coyotes' Division-I history, they've captured two FBS wins. The first came in one of their first years as a Division-I program. In 2010, USD beat Minnesota 41-38 in Minneapolis. In 2017, USD beat Bowling Green 35-27.

Since then, they've come close to capturing a few more. Kanas State came back to beat them in 2015 and, just last year, South Dakota got hit with a late targeting call that led to a go-ahead touchdown by Kansas. The Jayhawks held for a 17-14 win.
